[Blog] Something Got to Me on Saturday
Written by BaltachaFanClub on Monday, 19th Oct 2009 10:51

On Saturday, standing in my usual place, my season ticket seat in the North/Sir Bobby lower, which I have held for a long while (not caring to think how much money has been spent in it over the 10 years), I was in earshot of what I consider the club's biggest problem.

Saturday's game against Swansea merited a better result in my opinion, but I will never boo an Ipswich team, I can't it's not in me, but that wasn't my issue, my problem was earlier, around the 70th minute.

After a few on-off spells of excitement throughout the game, moments of both teams threatening, there had been some singing, some noise generated and then the match took a down turn and the noise, like usual died off. A small group of fans a little way along from me (not Section 6 I hasten to add), tried to get the crowd going.

It worked sporadically but I feel it's the action on the pitch that generally pulls the crowd round. Anyway, after the third or fourth attempt one of the group, the smallest one in fact, I don't know if Small Man Syndrome kicked in, decided to shout something really rather offensive at the crowd, "Come on you $£%&s sing", which I take exception to as I sing when I choose to, talk to the people around me when I choose to and generally believe it is my right to do so as I pay my ticket like everyone else.

Then the real problem statement came, he shouted "That's what's wrong, there's no f*****g passion here any more!". I turned again to look, I am not an old person, in fact I turn 29 next month, but this chap must have been younger than me or if not had definitely not suffered a hard life, his youthful but spiteful appearance surrendered no obvious life trauma.

I felt annoyed about this as passion cannot be measured, certainly not by singing, shouting or being offensive, and then I started to think, when was the last regular noisy period for our fans, if it is noise that grades passion. Obviously derby games have their passion, but if it was to be looked at, Alex Ferguson claimed our 22,000 fans were a 12th man and sounded like 40,000 in 2000 when Fabian scored against Man Utd. That season, we were a noisy fanbase, and I was a lot younger and probably noisier.

I made a statement to a pseudo-Newcastle fan on the way home from our 4-0 capitulation that the Upper north overhang seems to stop the sound from below reaching the higher tier, because the pseudo-Geordie claimed Portman Road was a library.

He then went on to make a few conversational slips to reveal he was born in Sprowston and is actually a Norwich fan who wanted to be a Geordie fan on Sir Bobby's day (I berated him for the strange changing of colours he had shown, and how I would never wear another team's shirt) .

So anyway, I finish with a question, did the capacity expansion of Portman Road remove the passion? Or is the noise still there, and the design just stopping it from being heard? Or is all of it pure coincidence and none of it matters, especially as we don't win games at present?

jas0999 do you not think the atmosphere (or lack of) generated can have a positive or negative effect on the teams performance? Look at Stoke. They win so many games at home because of their fans and the difficult atmosphere they create for the away team.

jas0999, not everyone that goes to Portman Road needs to make a noise, however people who sit in the Lower North do. Its the one stand at Portman Road where fans can still express their feelings. If you want to go to Football and sit in silence, dont like bad language and want to spend ninety minutes moaning do it another area of the stadium. Our football team needs a vocal fanbase more than at anytime over recent years currently and I think its time the lower North stepped up to the plate. Up the town!!!

There is a difference between "singing" and "cheering." Supporting one's team is indeed helped by an "atmosphere"; but one idiot swearing at his own fans epitomises the problem - in fact he IS the problem. He probably stopped his fellow supporters from cheering for a good few minutes, and certainly prevented them from making any sound at all at that moment in the game. Thank you! - please shout at the players on the pitch in future, encouragingly, of course.......

Yep, i have to echoe alot of the sentiments on here. Saturday i had to sit next to an old boy and his mate in the lower tier of the BSR stand. All he talked about was everything other than football...even frickin' tumbledryers. He never even stood up when we scored. Secon hald i moved and stood for the rest of the game with a group of vocal lads and it was infinitely better.

The lower tier should be for those who want to sing and stand all game, if we all stay stood up, there's no way the stewards can throw us all out.

Trouble is, how do we get those who don't really get it out of that tier, and those in there to stay stood all game. Will improve the vocal verocity tenfold.

Really impressed with the support at the west Brom game, they stayed stood up and sang all game...that's what we need. Whatever some reckon on here it does lift you as a player...and right now we need it. PLus. im embarrased that people think Portman road is a library, i want it to be intimidating!

I have to agree with the RevAdrian that the pre-match music kills the potential pre-match atmosphere. This was massively evident at the Newcastle game when the atmosphere was building nicely until the music cut it short. This new idea of 'My Way' may help sort it out though if the club perseveres.

I'm not sure the decline in noise can be blamed on the layout of the stadium. There are several examples of PR being a cauldron of noise since the two stands were rebuilt. The fact is there hasn't been an awful lot to sing about lately, and I don't think anyone can be criticised for not getting excited about a team that is playing that poorly. Success breeds confidence, and confidence will lead to more noise! Unfortunately, the performances at PR have bred little more than despair among many fans lately...

but are the fans individuals with there own point of view? or mindless morons who sing mindlessly? Be cause they have no view of there own.
And to some of the comments, we regularly play rubbish.

Hi All,

I have gone to town games since I was 9 years old some 20 years!!! I went to the Anglo Italian games (and countless more since) - my point is 8-10k in fans there and we still made more noise.

The North stand is a Half baked measure designed more to heard as many people in to a same pace the old stand took up to make money, with disregard to the consequence of doing this meaning that no thought was put in to the design.
The reason I mention this is that I saw a part of a program about Wemberley the other day and it showed how the designers ensured there is no "dead corners of Sound" where it is lost causing sound to reverberate all the way round.

I think the club could do more to help it is self in a few ways.

Impose age restrictions to the North stand I seem to remember this used to be the case previously ensuring that moves the Families back into the family stands. do a group discount on seats in the north to get the groups of lads in there or even on the beer - Making money counts but so does good results which more people in will help get more money overall !!

2. Turn the north stand upper into an area for away game fans season ticket holders because these guys 1500 - 2000 of em make more noise away than 20,000 at home, give them a band - Christ sacrifice the seating space to make room. This will get a vocal point in the ground, and help generate atmosphere in a positive way -
3. Remove the few negative people in the ground- If The "Gobby TW*T in the north mentioned earlier is that bad then report him to an official - enough people do it they won’t be back or the formal written warning will be enough to shut em up!
Going round the ground the club needs to be perhaps a little stronger with people who constantly abuse players - (Christ we are bottom of the league to almost win on Saturday but to get a 1 -1 draw against a Swansea team who I think finished above us last season was a good result.) At other venues of entertainment you would be asked to leave if you abuse the performer in the manor some people do our players these people are not fans and are glory hunters left over from the "golden era" probably fans of other clubs coming to town just because they can’t get to their own club. Yes we would lose a little money but then I would pay more to go to a game knowing a good atmosphere and other fans wanting to enjoy the game would be there. Now I am not saying it should be cheer or you’re out because when we do fail as a team we as the fans should be allowed to pass comment on what we see on the pitch. But after 5 mins and a half chance that even the best player in the would have struggled to score. This is unreasonable and is sure to cause additional nerves.

Singing when we are winning is what a lot of you talk about on here – but that is not when it is needed it when we are struggling the players need to here that noise that positiveness coming through that will that says “ hey your losing it don’t matter cause your our boys your our team” that’s what helped burleys team of the Golden era play well that helped them beat the great inter Milan at Portman road – we didn’t have a roof that night we stood in the building site!

all that needs to said is sing your hearts out cause it wont get fixed over night

Up the town

Lets just get one thing straight, You do not have to be a virile young man to feel and show passion about football! It would be great to recreate the atmosphere of the old, all standing North Stand. There were plenty of teenagers, women and older people who all contributed to the vocal support. No need to write them off,Carsey! Agree that bringing away support closer would help and also like the idea, if that cant be achieved, of the ten pound pay on the gate in the Cobbold stand. The better we play, the more support will happen naturally. No booing, no matter how bad -the budgies are watching!!

i agree about the acoustics.how about this for a slice of fried gold. (this is gonna sound stupid btw but bear with it) we put microphones under the seats and controll the volume from a sound booth (dont think theres anything in the rules about that lol) OR (more logical) i dont strictly know how to work this, but we get a sound engneer and a scietist to have a look at the sound waves generated from a match and add some concave corners (i suppose very much like satalite dish) to catch the sound and reverbrate it around the stand hence making it louder, making the other stands want to join in. or more of us could just sing louder....

If the team plays well then the crowd gets excited, i thought the noise levels were ok saturday in the lower north,at times it was the best ive heard all season.I know its not going to happen but they should move the away fans down the other end of the cobbold that would improve things,as when the away fans start singing they give the south stand stick and there doesnt seem to be alot given back.

Nothing really to add, except, do you remember a late goal to beat Man City 1-0 by Tony Vaughan, soon after Uwe Rosler had been brought as a sub for them to the tune The Dambusters sung by just about everybody. The (then) North Stand had great atmosphere that day. But that was quite a long time ago, probably more than 10 years ago. It will take time to build back the atmosphere, and for home games, you have a have a successful team playing week in, week out (as for the Man Utd visit back in 2000 mentioned earlier). The atmosphere then will build back up over games, but the team has to be winning most of its home games. There's now been quite a long period of time when the team has just not been successful enough, even during the great home record of two seasons ago, the team was not always winning with ease. I think it's about expectancy. People are not turning up to PR saying, "we will win today", "we pretty much know the team that is going to be put out", "we can really get behind the team and be the 12th man to get us over the winning line if we need to".

They should have rebuilt the SBR stand over the road instead of dividing the most vocal stand into two tiers. The biggest continuous tier in the stadium is now the Green King upper. Just relocate there. Next to the away fans, the accoustics should be good because the side walls extend right to the front so the noise won't escape. Better view. You know it makes sense. Start a new Ipswich kop and bring back the intimidating atmosphere for away teams.
